The Essential Sweater Guide

Updated: Jan 15, 2023

Holy crap sweater weather is just the best. We are in the thick of it right now in the Northeast, but it truly never gets old. I have spent many years hunting down the quintessential sweaters to have in my wardrobe, and I hope the below list helps you in your hunt.

What makes a sweater "essential"? To me, it means that it is flattering, comfortable (read: I'm not pulling at it all day), is in a classic silhouette, and can go as well with jeans as it does with trousers or a skirt. Phew - that is asking a lot of a sweater! But these make the cut:

This sweater has been a part of my collection for years, and don't you dare think I don't have it in multiple colors. I have a 'thing' for v-necks as you will see - they are the superstar of necklines in my opinion and flatter everyone.

Isn't this sweater to die for? It is absolutely an investment, but it's one that you won't regret. The funnel neck is super classic and flattering, and the cashmere is so lush. This color particularly is gorgeous, but I have it in taupe, black, and grey (the holy trifecta in a neutral wardrobe).

J.Crew and I have had a very longstanding love affair. We can do a deep dive into that another time, but for now, please just know that this sweater and I are very much in love. It comes in a million colors (and they're J.Crew colors which you know are gorgeous), is a more affordable take on cashmere but with all the high quality makings, and is incredibly flattering. This particular sweater has gone through many iterations over the years, and after making my annual trek to try it on in hopes of finding a crewneck I felt didn't make me look like a linebacker (repeat after me, v-necks are our friends), I practically squealed when trying the 2021 version on. Good news, they kept it for 2022!

Another V-neck? Groundbreaking. But trust me, this one is amazing. Soft, sturdy, flattering, and definitely checks all the boxes for versatility. I admittedly have acquired this one in a few colors over the last few years as well and always appreciate the investment when I bring back out my fall/winter clothes!

One of my favorite investments over the years, the Ridley sweater is an All Saint all star. When I first saw this sweater, I was really skeptical as to how it would look on me, but I was so excited to see how flattering and slimming it is (I have a bad history with drop shoulders). To me, the silhouette embodies the definition of classic with an edge!

Remember what I said about drop shoulders? Well this sweater is another little miracle that pulls off the impossible of having drop shoulders that don't betray me. I have this sweater in neutrals, but this striped version just landed on the site and I am so excited to grab it - I have yet to hop on the striped sweater train this year and there have been so many cute ones that sell out before I can get them! This sweater is sturdy, so versatile with sneakers, boots, whatever, and the half-zip is so flattering.

What better to round off the list but ONE. MORE. V-NECK. But please trust me when I say that the amazingness of this one is off the charts. So, like the J.Crew crewneck sweater, there have been many iterations of this silhouette over the years, and this one is a couple years in. I finally caved this year and tried it out (size down!) and I'm happy to say that J.Crew and I continue our happy lives together. It has all the elements - affordable, lush cashmere, amazing colors (though I would die if they made even more!) and so flattering. I typically do a sort of french tuck with my sweaters and with the way this one falls, I don't have to. I've already paired it with jeans and trousers and absolutely love it!
