The Essential Button-Up Guide

Ok, let's talk button-up's. To me, they are the hero of my wardrobe - whether I am at work or going out, the likelihood of me wearing a button-up is pretty freaking high. You can dress them up, you can dress them down, they provide such a great blank canvas to spotlight jewelry, shoes, jeans, whatever you'd like. Plus, if you know my feelings on v-necks, button-up's have a very similar concept in that the more you unbutton them, the more flattering they are - this is where fabric tape becomes your best friend!

This list specifically falls into more of the casual category, but I will cover blouses (aka: silk button-up's) in the next post.

So what makes a button-up essential? I like mine a bit oversized and the fabric is also super important. Have you ever done a french tuck with a button-up only to realize later when looking in the mirror that it's coming untucked and your stomach is showing? Just me? Well, depending on the fabric that can happen - if you don't know, now you know!

Starting at the top of the list is the most classic of classic button-ups - Jenni Kayne's take on this shirt is pure perfection. The fit is incredible, the material is luxe (mark my words, the white isn't see through!), and it can be dressed up or down so easily. I will fully admit, I was staring at this shirt for months before finally pulling the trigger and I couldn't believe I waited so long!

Well, it doesn't get much cooler than The Reformation's version of the button-up. Definitely oversized, I size down from my normal size in it, do a little french tuck (or don't - even cooler!) and pair it with some edgy jewelry and we are on our way.

Oh, hello J.Crew! The first of two shirts on this list, this one is their take on the relaxed fit button-up, and it is so so good. With a slight drop shoulder and the perfect amount of relaxed fit, I find this shirt to be a great option when I want to be casual in jeans and sandals or dressed up slightly with jeans and boots.

Ok, so if you would have told me that Abercrombie and Fitch would have this incredible revival, I would have thought you were crazy, but here we are. My 16 year old self would never believe it! But I am loving their clothes these days, and this shirt is absolutely fantastic. It comes in what feels like a million beautiful colors and really gets me out of my 'white or blue shirt' routine.

Jenni Kayne, you completely have me hooked. Another shirt I was hesitating over, I couldn't believe I sat on the decision so long. Another one you'll want to size down in, this is such a luxury California girl take on the relaxed shirt that Jenni Kayne just generally does so well.

I love this shirt so so much, but with Everlane, how could you go wrong? The fabric is this mixture between silk and cotton (hence the name, duh Rebecca!), it's incredibly flattering, and my favorite part about it is that it can so easily be dressed down with jeans or paired with trousers for work.

Rounding out the list is one more from J.Crew. They came out with the "relaxed" and "classic" fits last year, and I couldn't be happier with how they fit. The classic is exactly what you'd expect from the name, and it is midway in price point between Abercrombie & Jenni Kayne (and you can usually catch a great sale)!
